Annual Fiesta Celebration

Your El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is preparing for our biggest, most inspiring event of the year, the 26th Annual Fiesta Celebration taking place on Saturday October 15th at the Wyndham El Paso Airport Hotel. Besides tequila, a delicious dinner, and networking; this year we are taking a walk down the memory lane of success with special guest speaker, Dr. Bennet Omalu who was the first to discover and publish findings of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in American football players and who was the inspiration behind the 2015 Film “Concussion,” and is portrayed by Will Smith.

Dr. Bennet Omalu brings to the stage a rare combination of humility and fervor, as he shares his story of going from humble beginnings in war-torn Nigeria to becoming one of the biggest disrupters in the history of sports and medicine. He details the challenges he faced taking on the NFL and other top US franchises to ensure that the truth—and risk—of chronic brain damage was known, understood, accepted, and at all costs, prevented. He will also discuss the biases and obstacles he overcame as an immigrant staunchly committed to studying medicine in the U.S. and rising to the top of his field, despite all odds.

Dr. Omalu's efforts to study and publicize CTE in the face of NFL opposition were reported in a GQ magazine article in 2009 by journalist Jeanne Marie Laskas. The article was later expanded by Laskas into a book titled Concussion. Later this book was adapted into a film of the same name where Dr. Omalu is the central character portrayed by Will Smith. The movie's production led to the creation of a foundation named after Omalu to advance CTE and concussion research. “Small businesses face adversity and challenges every single day,” states Cindy Ramos-Davidson CEO of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Dr. Omalu’s message of overcoming adversity will resonate with them and encourage them to keep on doing what they are doing – because it matters! He has an inspirational story of doing the right thing and making a difference in the lives of so many. Inviting Dr. Omalu to speak was an easy decision to make, and we hope every business owner that is hungry for encouragement and inspiration will join us!”

Our Fiesta Celebration & Piñata Bash is the premier event of the year where we celebrate all of our members, local talent, effort, successes, and the surpassed challenges of the entire year. The 2016 Fiesta Celebration will include a General Reception at 6:00 pm, with drinks and music; followed by a delicious dinner at 8:00 pm! Our Fiesta is also an opportunity to commemorate prominent individuals or groups with the “Moving Forward” and the “Vision of Excellence” Awards. The Moving Forward Award, our eldest recognition, commemorates an individual for his/her leadership, valuable support to education and for serving as a role model to future generations. Meanwhile, the Vision of Excellence Award recognizes the paradigm of success and vision filled with the promise of a powerful and better future for our borderland community. The 2016 award recipients will soon be announced! “This year has been one of the most successful years for our members and there is no better time to showcase and celebrate all of the successes than at our Fiesta,” states Oscar Venegas 2016 Chairman of the board of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

A special addition to the inspiring evening will be our traditional tequila toast, live music, and one lucky guest to win a Piñata filled with over $2,000 worth of amazing prizes, services, and items provided by fellow members and partners. Tables are available for members and non-members of the chamber for $1500 (seats 10) and do not forget our specialty sponsorship opportunities! Visit our website, contact your Hispanic Chamber, or visit us any day to confirm your assistance to this one of a kind event.

“The Annual Fiesta Celebration is a great opportunity for the City of El Paso to see everything that the members of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce accomplish in only one year,” says Irma Bocanegra, Chair of the Fiesta Planning Committee. “This is a time for everyone to be applauded for all of their success. Join us for a fun, inspiring night with one of the most brilliant minds of our time!”
